Welcome to Kennall Vale Cheese

We are Trevor and Julie, small artisan cheese makers, based on our dairy farm at Gadles, on the hill above the Cornish village of Ponsanooth, near Falmouth, overlooking the beautiful Kennall Vale. We hand-make our award-winning farmhouse cheese by traditional methods using the superb quality creamy milk from our own herd of pedigree Ayrshire cows.

We began making cheese a number of years ago in our farmhouse kitchen for our own use, and for friends and family, and were encouraged by all who tasted it to take things a stage further. Having set up a small dairy on the farm last summer, just a few yards from where the cows are milked, we now produce both a pasteurised and an unpasteurised cheese, both of which are available to purchase at local farmers markets, farm shops, delicatessens and other retail outlets. Many people are now very concerned about food miles, and the provenance of what they eat, and we are delighted to be able to tell them about our farm, and the fact that our milk is still warm from the cow when the cheese making process begins.

We have a history of Cornish dairy produce – the Treloar family (after whom our pasteurised cheese is named, and Julie’s mother’s maiden name) were dairy farmers over many generations. Great-grandmother Treloar would walk several miles to the market in the town of Helston, where she would sell what she had made, before walking back to the farm. We are passionate about what we do, and feel that we are continuing a family tradition and are very proud to be able to do so.

Our traditional hard-pressed artisan farmhouse cheese is made exclusively with the beautiful creamy milk from our own herd of Ayrshire cows.

The Ayrshire breed of dairy cow originates in Scotland. Our cows are hardy and placid, and their creamy milk is renowned for its excellent cheese making properties.
